At Wok Express, we are proud to use fresh vegetables and high quality meats in our dishes, but our dedication to healthy cooking starts with the things you can’t see – the oil we use.
Coconut oil is now touted as one of the healthiest oils and it’s for many good reasons that we’ve decided to include some special dishes cooked in coconut oil in our Wok Express menu.

1) It’s Great To Cook With
Many people are aware of the unhealthy cooking oils and choose to cook with olive oil, however olive oil is unstable at high heats and is much better as a salad dressing. On the other hand, coconut oil is very stable at high heats, so it will not turn rancid or oxidize during stir frying.

2) It contains Medium Chain Fatty Acids
Not all saturated fats are created equal. Coconut oil is an excellent source of medium chain fatty acids, which are smaller than the long chain fatty acids found in bad saturated fat such as ‘trans fats’. MCFA permeate cell membranes easily, so they are easily digested and processed by the body. Studies indicate that they have no negative effect on cholesterol, are quickly converted to energy and can even help stimulate the metabolism to boost weight loss. Here’s a wee fact: Pacific Island populations get around 30-60% of their calorie intake from coconut oil and have almost non-existent rates of cardiovascular disease. Interesting huh?

3) It Contains Lauric Acid
Coconut oil is high in Lauric Acid, an incredible health booster. In fact, the only other source of Lauric Acid is in human breastmilk where it converts to a substance called monolaurin in the body, helping to increase a baby’s immune system. Understandably, coconut oil is a much more palatable way to get the good health benefits of Lauric Acid in our diet! Coconut oil also contains capric acid and caprylic acid, and these acids combine to make coconuts antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, antimicrobial and overall AWESOME for our health.

4) It’s Delicious
Coconut oil is ideal for stir frying, but importantly, it tastes great. Our menu options include certain dishes cooked with coconut oil so that you gain from the health benefits of this wonderful oil AND because the subtle flavour complements a range of Thai and Chinese dishes without overpowering other herbs and spices. Our dishes are as good for you as they taste and what’s not to love about that?!
