Keto Crispy Pork Belly Wok Express
As summer is approaching, many of us can relate to looking at ourselves in a mirror and seeing the joys of winter and autumn eating. Who doesn’t like to eat hot and hearty food when the weather is cold? But every year as we approach beach weather there is a large percentage of us that want to lose a few kilos but are often confused or put off by the myriad of dieting options.
At Wok express, we have been serving healthy food for many years and have a robust Vegan menu, but we also understand that not everyone wants to follow this kind of diet and we feel we have found the perfect weight loss diet for people who still love to eat meat and it’s called the Keto diet.
So what is the Keto diet? Put simply, our bodies love carbohydrates (or carbs) and loves to consume them, store them and burn them for fuel. The downside of burning carbs is that if we don’t use them all they tend to get stored as fat in our bodies and we only really start to burn fat when our body’s carbs in our bloodstream and digestion system have run out.

But what if we want to skip burning carbs and burn the fat that we managed to store over winter? That’s where the Keto diet comes in. By limiting the number of carbs to a very low amount, our bodies have no choice other than to burn our fat stores for fuel instead. This is called ketosis and it’s what the Keto diet is all about.
Typically a Keto diet tries to keep a maximum of 20 grams of carbs a day, which basically keeps your body in the ketosis state by depriving it of the carbs its loves. So essentially we are looking at foods that maximize protein and even fat at the expense of carbs.
We have a range of dishes at Wok Express tailored to the Keto diet as it’s becoming more popular as a weight-loss option. Some of our favorite dishes that you can order for your takeaways such as Crispy Pork Belly stir-fried in healthy coconut oil and comes with delicious bok choy and broccoli, or our range of cauliflower fried rice dishes which as extremely low in carbs, some in vegan options and are filling and tasty.

So why does Wok Express have keto options? Well, Paul who owns Wok Express with his wife Pim was struggling a little with his weight five years ago and had heard of the effectiveness of the keto diet and how people had been very successful with it. That’s when he had a moment and realized he could eat meat and veggies to keep his food interesting and tasty and let’s face it many of us are driven by our taste buds. His kitchens were already stocked full of lovely low-carb veggies and proteins and it would be pretty simple to try the Keto diet.
He also discovered that there were basically zero keto low carb takeaway options in NZ and wanted to ensure his new diet could be available for anyone who was seeking it. Now fast forward five years and Wok Express has a range of keto dishes and it’s become a significant part of the business, with many people now frequently ordering only Wok Express Keto takeaways.
When people start their Keto diet for the first time, many people will maintain it strictly until they reach their weight loss goals. Some people stay with this while others slow reintroduce carbs up to 100 grams a day and still maintain their bodies

in ketosis. Everyone’s metabolisms are different in this regard. At Wok express, some dishes can cater for those who both want strictly zero carbs and others for people who are happy with a little carb once in a while.
So is it as simple as just eating pork chops and cabbage all day? Well, not quite and to ensure Wok Express meals are as tasty, healthy, and varied as possible – Paul and Pim take a range of steps in preparing the keto meals to ensure they are as extremely low carb as can be. Sugar is not used in sauces or stir-fries, instead, Paul purchases 25kg sacks of erythritol, which is basically an artificial sweetener based around sugar alcohol.
Erythritol provides only 6% of the calories found in sugar and is naturally found in a range of foods that start to ferment. Erythritol is very sweet and is very close to actual sugar in its sweetness profile so when we use it in our tasty dishes most people can barely tell the difference, but yet this sweetener is a great tool in weight loss.
Stevia is another option as a sugar substitute and is a sweetener derived from the leaves of certain plants in South America. It’s is super sweet and if it’s mixed with erythritol it becomes a more balanced sweetener called
